Blyde River Canyon: Breathtaking Views from God’s Window
If you haven’t been to Blyde River Canyon yet, you’re seriously missing out. Only 50km from Hoedspruit, this natural wonder has jaw-dropping cliffs and epic viewpoints like the Three Rondavels and God’s Window.
For those that prefer the ocean, it’s not Ballito… but… Ballito is not Blyde River Canyon. It’s something to behold, a completely different experience and it will be something you’ll never forget.
It’s one of the largest green canyons in the world; think towering cliffs covered with lush green trees, grass and shrubs; deep river gorges, and views that’ll make you question why you’ve never considered going to this beautiful part of the world.

Weather in Hoedspruit
HOEDSPRUIT WEATHERHonestly, the route from Gauteng to Mpumalanga is quite an experience. You’ll also drive past Graskop. It’s not too far either, 410km, and once you get there… Oh my word. Just feast your eyes on the image above for a second.
Where to Stay
There’s no ATKV resort at Blyde River Canyon, but you’ve got some solid options and you can check availability for accommodation in Hoedspruit, 50km away:
- Blyde River Canyon Lodge
A proper bush experience with great views and wildlife roaming around. - Forever Resorts Blyde Canyon – Book Accommodation
Good for families, and it’s right inside the nature reserve.
If you’re coming from somewhere like Kruger National Park, it’s an easy drive and well worth the detour.
What to See
There are a few must-visit spots:
1. Three Rondavels:
Massive, round rock formations that look like traditional African huts. You’ve probably seen them in a million travel photos, but nothing beats seeing them in person.
2. God’s Window:
A viewpoint that gives you an endless view over the Lowveld. On a clear day, you can see as far as Mozambique.
3. Bourke’s Luck Potholes:
Weird, swirling rock formations created by water erosion. They’re like nature’s own abstract art.
What to Do
- Hiking
There are trails for all fitness levels, from easy walks to serious climbs. Every path comes with insane views. - Boat Cruises
As you’ll see in the pic above, there are two white spots in the water. Those are boats, and you can take a boat ride on the Blyde Dam, where you’ll get up close to the canyon walls and could spot hippos and crocodiles. - Wildlife Spotting
The whole area is packed with wildlife; baboons, antelope, and even the rare Taita falcon… if you’re lucky. - Visit the Echo Caves
It is an underground wonderland waiting to be explored. They offer guided tours, restaurants and curio shops. Echo Caves in pics.
