Constantia

Swimming pool and view

We have some questions about this pic… like, are those crops in the background green now?

Looking for things to do and accommodation to stay in Constantia?

You’re in for a treat, because Constantia doesn’t just sit there looking pretty (though it absolutely does that too). Constantia delivers.

Constantia really is the grand-daddy of South African wine. When you visit, it’s like every sip comes with a history lesson. I mean, they’ve been making wine there since 1685!

It’s the kind of place where you can feel the centuries in the atmosphere, especially at the original estates like Groot Constantia. And how crazy is it that their famous sweet wine was loved by historical figures like Napoleon and Jane Austen? That’s what I would call a legacy!

You’ve got Cape Dutch homesteads tucked between vineyards, mountain views that make you stop mid-sentence, and a food and wine scene that punches way above its weight. It’s leafy, it’s gorgeous, and it’s ridiculously close to the city center – about 20 minutes from the V&A Waterfront, which is almost unfair when you consider how peaceful it feels.

The thing with Constantia is that it’s not trying too hard. It just… is. You can spend a morning hiking up to Elephant’s Eye Cave, have lunch at a wine estate, then be back in town for sunset at Camps Bay. Or you can stay put for the whole day and never run out of things to do. Wine tastings, farm-to-table restaurants, forest trails, historic manor houses… it’s all right there.

There’s also this lovely mix of locals and visitors. You’ll see families cycling the Constantia Greenbelt on a Sunday morning, couples doing the wine farm circuit, and hikers tackling the Constantiaberg trails. It doesn’t feel overrun or overly touristy, even when it’s busy. It just feels… right.

The wine estates are the obvious drawcard, and they should be. Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting… these aren’t just places to drink wine (though you absolutely should). They’re destinations in themselves, with restaurants, gardens, and that “I could stay here all day” kind of atmosphere.

But Constantia’s not just about wine. The nature here is stunning, the food scene is seriously good, and there’s enough variety that you can tailor your day exactly how you want it. Active and outdoorsy? Sorted. Slow and indulgent? Also sorted.

Best time to visit? Summer (December to February) is beautiful, though the estates do get busy. Autumn (March to May) is my personal favourite – when the vineyards change colour, the weather’s still warm, and there’s a bit more breathing room. Winter has its own charm too, especially if you’re into cozy wine tastings by the fireplace. Spring brings flowers and energy back to the trails.

Right then. Here’s what you should actually do when you’re in Constantia – the spots that make it worth the trip.
