Stellenbosch

Booking accommodation in Stellenbosch is one of those things where you’ve got almost too many options, which sounds like a nice problem until you’re actually trying to decide. The town of Stellenbosch itself is stunning, it has old oak trees in the streets, Cape Dutch architecture, and mountains as a backdrop.

It’s also right there in the heart of the Winelands, so you’re never far from a good meal or a wine farm worth visiting.

The thing is, what you pick really depends on what kind of stay you’re after. If you want to be in the thick of things, there are guesthouses and boutique hotels right in the town centre where you can walk to restaurants, galleries, and the university campus.

It is lively, let me warn you… especially when the university students are around, but… you get that proper Stellenbosch atmosphere ALL THE TIME! There are students cycling past, cafés on the pavements, that sort of energy. France or Amsterdam, right here in the heart of South Africa… possibly?

Then there’s staying out on the wine estates themselves, which is a different vibe altogether. You’re surrounded by vineyards, it’s quieter, and you wake up to mountain views rather than street sounds. Luxury and more, think spa treatments, fine dining, your own plunge pool overlooking the vines. Others are more relaxed, family-run spots where the focus is on good wine and a comfortable bed.

I’ve stayed in both, and honestly, they’re memorable for different reasons. In town, you’re part of the rhythm of the place. On an estate, you slow down completely. There’s also the practical side… if you’re planning to do wine tastings, staying out on a farm means you’re not driving back into town afterward, which is worth thinking about. 🙂

Peak season, especially over December and January, books up fast. The town gets busy with tourists and locals escaping to the Winelands for summer.

Harvest time around February and March is beautiful if you want to see the estates in action. Winter’s quieter and often better value, plus there’s something quite cozy about Stellenbosch in the rain with a fireplace and a good bottle of red.

Here are a few places that stands out; each one will give you a true Stellenbosch experience.
