The pretty little town of Vrede lies in what is described as the 'spine' of the Drakensberg, surrounded by rolling hills covered in highveld grasses, in the Free State.
Situated just off the N3 north east of Harrismith and virtually on the border with Mpumalanga, Vrede is on the main route from Johannesburg via Newcastle to the North Coast.
The town's Afrikaans name "Vrede" can be directly translated to "Peace" in English.

- Route from O.R. Tambo International Airport with Toll:
- Exit the airport and take Exit 46.
- Follow signs for R24/Johannesburg, drive for 1 km.
- Continue onto R24, travel 8.1 km.
- Merge onto N12/R24, proceed for 1 km.
- Use left 3 lanes, take Exit 113 for N3 S/N12 towards M2/Kimberley/Germiston/Durban, drive 1.3 km.
- Merge onto N3 Eastern Bypass/N12/N3, go 3.7 km.
- Keep right to remain on N3 Eastern Bypass/N12/N3, proceed 3.6 km.
- Keep left at fork, follow signs for Heidelberg/Durban/N17/Springs on N3, drive 141 km.
- Take Exit 133 for R34 towards Vrede/Frankfort, travel 1.1 km.
- Turn left onto R34, drive 13.2 km.
- Turn right onto R103/R34, proceed 14.9 km.
- Turn left onto R34, continue 13.6 km.
- Stay on R34, drive 2.8 km.
- Turn left onto R543, travel 9.7 km.
- Turn left, continue 15.6 km.
- Turn right, drive 1.5 km.
