The town's history dates back to the Anglo-Boer War of 1879 when Sir Frederick Richards established a makeshift harbour. Named after him, Richards Bay remained a small, quiet fishing village for many years. However, a hydrographic survey in the mid-20th century revealed that the bay had far greater potential for development than Durban. As a result, Richards Bay began its transformation, and by 1976, it had evolved into South Africa’s largest harbour and the world’s largest coal terminal.

- Start by heading northeast on Boulevard Rd/King Shaka Dr for 23 meters, keeping right to continue on Boulevard Rd.
- Drive 1.0 km, then turn left onto Dube Blvd. This is a toll road, and you will drive for approximately 2.6 km.
- After 2.6 km, make a slight left to merge onto the N Coast Toll Rd/N2 for 700 meters.
- Follow the N2 to John Ross Hwy/R34. Take exit 327 from the N2 (this will take about 1 hour 14 minutes and cover approximately 128 km).
- Merge onto N Coast Toll Rd/N2 and drive for 98.1 km, continuing straight on the N2 for another 29.7 km.
- Take exit 327 for R34 toward Richards Bay/Empangeni/Ulundi, and continue for about 500 meters.
- Follow the R34 to Davidson Lane in Meer En See, Richards Bay, for about 17 minutes (18.1 km).
- Turn right onto John Ross Hwy/R34 and continue to follow the R34 for 16.9 km.
- Turn right onto Hibberd Dr, then right again onto Davidson Lane. Your destination will be on the left.
