Gentle Presence was originally a stable. In the 1900’s farmers gathered here in ox wagons to share Holy Communion (Nagmal). Guests can stay in the Main Cottage (sleeps 6) or the Romantic Garden Cottage (sleeps 2). Both offer exceptional mountain views and are set apart from each other for privacy.

Description
Dating back to the 1900’s Gentle Presence is one of the oldest sandstone buildings in Clarens and was thought to have been a stable. Farmers gathered here staying in ox wagons and sharing in Holy Communion (Nagmal).
Due to the exceptional mountain views, the property was originally named Kyk Die Berge (Look at the Mountains) and was the only multi-level structure in Clarens, with locals nicknaming it “Die Flets” (the Flats). It has a charming history which we would love to share with you.
There are 2 Self-Catering Cottages, both with own entrances, parking and entertainment areas. The Cottages can be booked together or individually as needed.

Area Info
Clarens is a small village situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State province of South Africa and nicknamed the "Jewel of the Eastern Free State". The village lies at the foot of Mount Horeb and is on he Free State Highlands Route close to the Golden Gate National Park.
Being an easy 3 to 4 hour drive from JHB or Durban is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the eastern Free State. The area appeals to young and old with many activities such as abseiling, hot air ballooning, hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, quad biking, horse riding, game drives, tours to cultural villages and into Lesotho. It is also a great base from which to explore the area and the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.
Clarens has become the long weekend mecca of those after an arty, sleepy hollow with just enough entertainment not to be dull.
Directions
- From the R712 turn into Main Street Clarens.
- Continue until the T-Junction (Town Square) – Passing the Protea Hotel on your right.
- At the T-Junction you will turn left into Van Zyl Street.
- Continue straight passing The Purple Onion Deli on your left.
- Cross over the next street (Roos) and continue past the Roter Hahn Restaurant on your right.
- At the next street, turn right into Krom Street.
- For Cottage 1 (6 Sleeper) - Continue past Market Street and Gentle Presence is the 1st gates on the left - The Cottage is on your left as you enter the premises.
- For Cottage 2 (2 Sleeper) - Follow above directions but turn left into Market Street. The entrance will be the 1st gates on your right. Park under the shade cloth bay and walk in direction of your vehicle. The Cottage is at the bottom left corner of the property on entry.
- Call +2782 9565676 on arrival or open safe with code sent to retrieve the keys.
Cancellation Policy
- If cancelling 3 days before arrival, forfeit 100% of the deposit.
- If cancelling 7 days before arrival, forfeit 30% of the deposit.
Conditions
Terms & Conditions: -
Cottage 1 - Guests need to be aware of unusual stairs that are not suitable for infants, children under 8 or those who battle with stairs.
There is a sleeper couch in open plan living room for children/young adults.
Ground floor has a guest toilet with basin only (no shower/bath).
Both Cottages are for your private use and best suited to family or close friends.
Kindly take note that Cottage 1 entrance is via Krom Street and Cottage 2 entrance is in Market Street.
Parking is behind locked gates and motorcycles are welcome.
No events/parties or loud noise after 10:30pm as residential suburb.
Strictly no smoking/vaping indoors. Smoking on balcony and outdoors only.
Guests are asked to respect our private home which is on the shared property.
Extra guests not declared will be asked to pay on arrival or access will be denied to guests.
All fires are to be extinguished properly when no longer in use.
