  • Visitors to Cypress Cottage are within walking distance from many of the old buildings that have been declared National Monuments. The most interesting being the Dutch Reformed Church (‘Moederkerk’) with its eclectic architectural features and the famous (VOC) Drostdy Museum Complex (1747) consisting of several historical buildings, a restaurant and gift shop. Guests are also welcome at the Pottery studios of Bukkenburg and the Kunstehuijs Fine Art Gallery. Swellendam is also home to the Wildebraam Youngberry estate with its Liqueur tasting facility and deli.

Swellendam, the third oldest magisterial district in South Africa, is a charming town with a fascinating history.

Strategically located on the very cross roads between the Small Karoo with its Route 62, the Overberg region and the Garden Route, Swellendam has much to offer visitors interested in heritage, culture, architecture, wildlife and outdoor adventure.

It is also an ideal base from which to explore the neighbouring Southern Cape with Cape L’Agulhas the most southern tip of the mainland of Africa, and the Breede River Valley with its fantastic Wine Estates.

  • Directions from Mosselbay:
  • Take the N2 (south westerly direction). Pass the towns of Albertinia, Riversdale and Heidelberg until you get Swellendam. Turn right into Swellendam (Swellengrebel Street. This street becomes Voortrek Street). Pass the Drostdy Museum, cross the Koornlands River and you will find Cypress Cottage at 3 Voortrek Street. Look out for the big cypress tree in front of Cypress Cottage.
  • Directions from Cape Town:
  • Take the N2 (easterly direction). Cross the Hottentots Holland Mountains via the Sir Lowry's Pass. Pass the towns of Grabouw, Caledon and Riviersonderend before you get Swellendam. Take the first turnoff to Swellendam, at the 4 way stop turn right into Voortrek Street (main road). Proceed along Voortrek Street (+/- 3 km), pass the big white NG Church (on your left), 200m further you get Cypress Cottage at 3 Voortrek Street. Look out for the big cypress tree in front of Cypress Cottage.

Daniel, the friendly Labrador and Raffa and Kleintjie, the two grey cats will welcome you. They love attention and cuddles, but please do not feed them as they are on special diets.

Check in time is from 14:00 to 18:00 and check out time not later than 10:30, but can be earlier. If you plan to arrive after 18:00 please be so kind and inform us. +27826551334 or +27829267928

The reception is in front of the guest house. You can stop your car in front of the guest house to book in, but do not take out your luggage then, as the guest parking is at the back of the guest house and very close to the rooms and convenient to carry the luggage to the rooms.

Cypress Cottage is fully licensed, and alcoholic beverages can be purchased on the premises.

Breakfast is not included, but it can be provided on request at rate of R200.00 per breakfast per person for the full breakfast and R150.00 per person for the continental breakfast. Children under the age of 4 eats for free.

The breakfast is freshly cooked with love and can be enjoyed in the Victorian dining room or on the veranda overlooking the lush front garden.
