Ilanga Lodge is situated in the heart of the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo’s Waterberg region, just a 2½ hour drive from Johannesburg. The area is part of the UNESCO-declared Waterberg Biosphere, known for its diverse landscapes, including rugged hills, open savannahs, river valleys, and woodland, all of which support an extraordinary range of wildlife.

Guests can enjoy front-row views of a nearby dam where animals frequently gather, creating exceptional game viewing opportunities right from the lodge. The reserve is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—as well as a wide variety of plains game and over 250 bird species.

Ilanga Lodge offers an exclusive and tranquil retreat with just six en-suite rooms, making it ideal for small groups or families seeking a private safari experience. Activities in the area include twice-daily game drives, birdwatching, nature walks, and scenic sundowners, all set within a pristine and protected wilderness that feels both remote and accessible.

Directions

From OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg:
Exit the airport and take the R21 north toward Pretoria.
Merge onto the N1 North toward Polokwane.
Stay on the N1 as you pass through Pretoria and continue toward the Kranskop Toll Plaza.
Shortly after the toll, take the R33 off-ramp toward Modimolle (formerly Nylstroom).
Drive through Modimolle and continue on the R33 toward Vaalwater.
As you approach Vaalwater, continue on the R517, also known as the Old Lephalale Road.
From Vaalwater, drive approximately 24–26 km until you see the Welgevonden Game Reserve’s Main Gate on the left-hand side.

*Check-in time: from 13:00
*Check-out time: by 10:00
*Conservation Levy: R350 per person/per night
*Guests must arrive at the Welgevonden Main Gate by 13:00, as you will be transferred to the lodge via game viewer (approx. 40-minute drive). No private vehicles are allowed beyond the gate.
*All guests are required to park at the Welgevonden Main Gate, from there, a game viewer will transfer you to the lodge.
*The credit card used for the online booking must be presented at check-in, along with the cardholder’s valid ID or passport.
*Daily housekeeping is included in the rate.
*Children of all ages are welcome.
*For safety reasons, children under the age of 6 are not permitted on game drives unless a private vehicle is booked in advance at an additional cost.
