Area Info
The area around Stokkiesdraai Holiday Accommodation, located at 74 McKenzie Street in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, sits within one of the most biodiverse and unique regions in South Africa — the gateway to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
St Lucia is renowned for its rich ecosystems, where wetlands, coastal dunes, lakes, estuaries, and savannah meet. It’s the heart of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which spans over 3,000 km² and is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, from elephants, rhinos, and leopards inland to whales, dolphins, and turtles along the coast.
What makes the area truly unique is that you can experience game drives, boat safaris, beach walks, and wetland excursions all within a short distance.
St Lucia offers an incredible range of wildlife and outdoor experiences, making it a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. One of the town's most unique and memorable features is the sight of hippos casually roaming the streets at night. Visitors can enjoy guided boat cruises on the St Lucia Estuary, where hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of bird species can be spotted in their natural habitat.
The nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve provide thrilling opportunities for game drives, where guests may encounter the Big Five, as well as zebras, giraffes, and antelopes. For those visiting between June and November, whale-watching tours offer the chance to see humpback whales migrating along the coast, while turtle tours take place from November to March, when loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest on the beaches. Outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy hiking, guided nature walks, birdwatching, and horse riding, all within proximity to the town, making St Lucia a truly immersive wildlife destination.
St Lucia Beach is wild and unspoiled, with golden sands and strong surf. Although not ideal for swimming due to currents, it’s great for beach walks, picnics, and exploring the dunes. Cape Vidal, about 30 km north within the park, offers a more sheltered bay that’s ideal for snorkelling and swimming, plus excellent fishing opportunities.
